I would like to weigh in on the topic of general assistance with some personal experience.

I have lived in Lewiston most of my life and, during the past several years, have struggled to find permanent work, despite having a degree from a prestigious university and many years of great experience and references.

Since January 2013 I have been fully unemployed and have had no income for the first time in my adult life. I subsequently lost my apartment and became homeless. I bounced from couch to couch for approximately two months, never knowing when my next meal would come or whether I would have the opportunity to shower, until I learned of the General Assistance Workfare program.

The program allowed me to work at minimum wage rates for Lewiston Public Works in exchange for a room at a boarding house. I have taken the help offered very seriously during the past several weeks, and have followed all requirements precisely.

I am grateful every day for the help from general assistance. I am also happy to report that I have since obtained a job and will be canceling my general assistance and regaining my independence.

I acknowledge that in some government programs, and society at large, unscrupulous individuals exist. But for those souls truly in need of a helping hand, the General Assistance Workfare program was a boon and I thank the city of Lewiston for providing it.

I can honestly say that the general assistance program saved my life.
