LEWISTON — Museum L-A began looking Friday for tinkerers, hobbyists, inventors and science buffs to populate its second Mini Maker Faire.

The Lewiston-Auburn Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Bates Mill Complex.

People wanting to host a display at the Lewiston-Auburn event should register at the website, makerfairelewistonauburn.com, before July 19.

This is the second year the museum has sponsored the event and Program and Events Coordinator Kate Griffith said they hope it will be bigger.

“Bigger, better and more,” Griffith said. “Last year, people were kind of confused by the concept because it was new to the area.”

A Maker Faire is a convention and show for amateur techno-philes, hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers. It brings inventors, craftmakers and science buffs together to show off their projects and have fun with interactive displays, games and demonstrations.

“I think people were pretty excited about the event last year, so we’re hoping for more interest,” she said.

The museum is hoping for as many as 50 people to host displays this year.

The events are supported by MAKE Magazine and O’Reilly Publishing.

Since the inaugural event, organizers have sponsored similar fairs around the world, including Detroit, Boston, New York and London.

They also support smaller “mini” fairs designed for between 300 and 6,000 attendees, which is the variety of that the museum will be hosting.

Museum L-A hosted a small Mini Maker Faire last year, with 20 to 25 people or groups presenting displays. They included high school robot-makers, crafters, weavers and Maine’s Eepybird — Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz of Buckfield. The pair gained international fame in 2006 with their Diet Coke and Mentos experiments.
