AUGUSTA — All-terrain vehicle owners will pay $5 more in annual fees if a bill that’s received final House approval becomes law.

The bill that was approved Monday would increase the annual fee for Maine residents to $38. The extra $5 must be deposited in the ATV Recreational Management Fund, which goes toward trail development and assists in the formation of ATV groups.

The fee bill’s sponsor, Democratic Rep. Sheryl Briggs of Mexico, told the fish and game committee during an April hearing she submitted the bill at the request of ATV Maine, which represents many ATV clubs in the state.

Briggs said the state has nearly 7,000 miles of trails and ATV riding generates nearly $300 million per year for the state’s economy.
