AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society will sponsor a walking tour of Oak Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, led by Auburn resident Jim Sargent.

Sargent said, “We will look into the lives and personal stories of a brigadier general, a Medal of Honor recipient, a couple of founding fathers and a woman of civic vision, to name a few. And, because Oak Hill’s history goes back to before the middle of the 19th century, we will enjoy a wide range of funerary art on the tombs, steles and monuments.”

He said a cemetery is an excellent visual aid for the telling of local history since it encompasses the histories of local residents over a long period of time.

This will be Sargent’s second talk on Oak Hill Cemetery. He led a snowshoe tour last February as part of an Androscoggin Land Trust outing.

Sargent’s family has had ties to Maine since buying a farm in Alfred in the 1920s. He has degrees in communication and business administration and is a certified financial planner.

This will be the first in a series of 11 programs sponsored by the society during the 2013-14 season.

There will be no charge, although donations will be accepted. Participants should meet at the entrance to the cemetery near 261 Seventh St.
