DIXFIELD — Newly hired superintendent Craig King has scheduled two special workshops as part of his effort to get to know the district and the community.

Both will be held at the community room at Dirigo High School.

The first is 4:30 p.m. Oct. 17 and will focus on an informal discussion with the local state delegation on legislation concerning schools.

Rep. Sheryl Briggs, D-Mexico, Rep. Matthew Peterson, D-Rumford, Rep. Jarrod Crockett, R-Bethel, Rep. Teresa Hayes, D-Buckfield, Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Franklin and Sen. John Patrick, D-Oxford, have been invited to discuss currently enacted legislation as well and bills that may be coming before the state legislature in the near future.

Among the questions King, as well as the RSU 10 board and others will likely ask, is the level of funding and general purpose aid to education public schools may expect during the next year or two, and how best to keep the lines of communication between the legislative delegation and school district leaders.

The second workshop is set for 3 p.m. Oct. 22.

King has invited local, state and Oxford County public safety personnel such as police and fire departments and the local ambulance service.

As a new administrator to the area, King wants to get to know each organization and to help develop a mutual understanding of current trends in public school safety.

The two-hour workshop will also allow each of the building principals to consult with public safety officials about school-based crisis and safety plans.

An informal discussion will focus on how both the school district and emergency personnel can work together on school safety issues.

King said, via news release, that he wants to ensure that local public safety officials are part of every school plan to create a safe and orderly environment.

Each of RSU 10’s schools has a crisis plan in place and a team to set it into action, if necessary.
