NEW YORK (AP) – A man, his wife and their son were sentenced Friday for stealing millions of dollars from the agency that runs the nation’s largest public transportation system.
Plumbing business owner Alex Figliolia Sr., 61, and his son, Alex Figliolia Jr., 31, pleaded guilty in September to enterprise corruption, admitting their crimes included bribing Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials, and stealing and laundering MTA money. Janet Figliolia, 54, pleaded guilty to bribery.
A judge sentenced the elder Figliolia to nearly two years to more than five years in prison; his son was sentenced to nearly three years to more than eight years. They would have faced up to 25 years if convicted at trial.
Janet Figliolia was sentenced to five years of probation.
The family company, Alex Figliolia Contracting Corp., was given a conditional discharge.
The defendants also paid restitution of $6 million to the MTA and forfeited $750,000 worth of Janet Figliolia’s jewelry.
Prosecutors alleged the Figliolias, with MTA employees’ help, stole the public agency’s money by inflating invoices, overcharging for labor and materials and forging business records. Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau had accused the Figliolias of spending most of the stolen money on personal luxuries.
