LEWISTON — Forecasters are calling for a return to normal winter weather in a storm expected throughout the area Sunday.

“Snow — that’s what’s going on,” said Michael Cempa, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Gray. “We’re not too concerned about ice at this point. This should be more of snow kind of event, the second half of the day and into the night.”

The City of Lewiston has called for a parking ban beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday through Monday morning to give crews time to clear roads.

Cempa said the storm should clear out by 3 a.m., with no precipitation expected during the morning commute.

“It should be a pretty fast storm,” he said.

The forecast calls for lighter snow along the coast and heavier accumulations to the west, including Lewiston. Inland Maine can expect between 6 and 10 inches. Portland and other parts of the coast are forecast to receive about 2 inches.

“We are running, for December, a little above normal as far as snow fall goes — but not significantly so,” he said.

Power outages continue

More than 4,000 Mainer homes were still without power Saturday, a week after an ice storm hit parts of northern New England, as more outages occur.

And utility officials say the weekend snowstorm could cause more outages.

Bangor Hydro Electric reported 5,370 outages by Saturday afternoon.

Maine emergency officials say t it could be next week before some parts of Hancock County get electricity back.

Central Maine Power, which at the peak of the storm had 87,000 customers without power, had 549 outages remaining Saturday morning. Over the course of the storm 123,000 Central Maine Power customers lost power.
