Robin Dow Seniors to meet

AUBURN — The Robin Dow Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Alden M. Gayton Post 31, American Legion, 426 Washington St.

The board of directors will meet at 10 a.m.

Valentine luncheon tickets will be on sale for $7, and membership dues for 2014 are to be paid in January.

Installation of the 2014 officers will be held at the Wednesday, Jan. 22, meeting. Guests and new members are always welcome.

Pine Cone Chapter, OES, to convene

AUBURN — Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Masonic Hal, 1021 Turner St.

Members will renew their obligation of the order and the landmarks will be  read. The associate conductress will give her lecture and the secretary will read the general information from the Grand Chapter Charity Fund. The worthy matron will honor  her officers.

The chapter has the traveling teapot for District 4.

Refreshments will be served in the dining hall after the meeting by Ellen Broas and Mary Lawlor. All Eastern Star members are welcome.

Hip fracturers, surgery to be topics

LEWISTON — “Preventing a Hip Fracture” and “Preparing for and Recovering from Hip Surgery” are the subjects of a special presentation set for Thursday, Jan. 9, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Swapna S. Gummadi, MD, a hospitalist at Central Maine Medical Center, will discuss how someone can reduce their risk for a hip fracture in three easy steps. Her presentation will focus on simple home safety modifications that can cut an individual’s risk of falling.

An orthopaedic surgeon from Central Maine Orthopaedics in Auburn will discuss “Preparing for and Recovering from Hip Surgery.”

The program will begin at 6 p.m. in the Chairmen’s Rooms on the lower level of the 12 High Street medical office building.

Bean, casserole supper is Jan. 11

LEWISTON — A bean and casserole supper will be held from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 59 Sabattus St. Use the Bartlett Street entrance.

Menu will include casseroles, salads, beans, biscuits and homemade pies. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children.

Humane society raffle winners

LEWISTON — Steven Dostie, executive director, has announced the winners of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society “Cold Paws, Warm Heart” annual raffle.

With more than $12,700 in tickets sales, the winners were Richard Disney of Lisbon Falls, winning $600 in home heating oil; Tom Nason of Turner, $300 in home heating oil; Sheena Rapoza of Belfast, $200 in home heating oil; and Louis Cloutier of Lisbon, $100 in home heating oil.

All proceeds from the raffle directly benefit the humane society, located at 55 Strawberry Ave. Those interested in learning more about volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal should call 783-2311 or visit the website at www.SavingPetsInMaine.org.
