1943 – 2014

SOUTH PARIS — Albert S. “Al” Hammond, 70, of South Paris, died at his home Thursday morning, Jan. 16.

He was born in Hartford on June 3, 1943, the son of Eldred and Julia Bryant Hammond. Al attended schools in South Paris and Buckfield, and worked as a truck driver and mechanic.

Al was a race car driver, racing for more than 50 years at Oxford Plains Speedway and other tracks up and down the East Coast. In 1971, he raced at Daytona International Speedway. Al had 91 career wins and won every time he raced in Arundel. His life was racing and in 2009, he was inducted into the Maine Motor Sports Hall of Fame.

He served on the board of directors for the Maine Vintage Race Car Association, was a member of Granite Lodge AF & AM in West Paris and served in the National Guard. He loved his family, his dogs, his home and the beautiful spot his home was on.

Al is survived by his wife, Delores, of South Paris; a son, Ryan Kane and his wife, Rae-Ann, of Oxford and their children, Adam, Alison and Kenson Kane; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Burnham and her husband, Matt, of Rumford and their children, Jessica and Joey Robichaud; a brother, Forrest Hammond and his wife, Gladys, of Turner; a sister, Mildred Vashaw and her husband, Norman, of Canton; and several nieces, nephews, very loyal fans, friends and crew.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son Albert S. Jr.; a brother, Malvern; and a sister, Sylvia Johnson.
