AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine legislative committee has approved a bill that would ban virtual charter schools while the state works on offering online learning resources to all students by the fall.
The Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee approved the amended bill Wednesday.
The Portland Press Herald reports that under the legislation a stakeholders group will work with school administrators to create a request for proposals to have the state work with New Hampshire’s virtual academy to allow Maine students to access their online resources by the fall.
The bill imposes a ban on any virtual charter schools in Maine between July 3 and Jan. 15, 2015, when the stakeholders group must report back to the Education Committee on how to offer online learning tools to Maine students.
