First Auburn Seniors meet Feb. 19

AUBURN — The next meeting of the First Auburn Seniors will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Hasty Community Center.

The board meeting will be at 10 a.m.

The meeting will be followed by a Valentine party with luncheon and the crowning of a Valentine king and queen. Cost is $5.

Tickets will be available for the March 19 boiled dinner. Cost is $5.

VFW Post 9150 meets Wednesday

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, instead of Monday, Feb. 17, because of the Presidents’ Day holiday.

All members and officers are encouraged to attend. Agenda will include upcoming activities.

Invasive insect volunteer training

LEWISTON — Invasive Forest Insect Outreach Volunteer Training will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Lewiston Public Works Dept., 103 Adams Ave. Reservations are required.

This is a training for people interested in learning about invasive forest pests that pose serious threats to the trees and forests of Maine, including emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, brown spruce longhorned beetle, hemlock wooly adelgid and others.

Participants will learn how to recognize the insects, the host trees, signs of infestation and how to survey and report suspicious areas. Participants will also learn how to effectively disseminate information to the public to help spread awareness.

Participants who attend the training will become volunteers of the Forest Pest Outreach and Survey Project, and help with outreach and survey. The FPOSP will provide materials for volunteers and loans of insects and sample tree damage displays for their outreach.

Additional workshops will be held March 13 in Jefferson and May 14 in Bar Harbor.

Legion Post 22 will meet Feb. 20

LEWISTON — American Legion Post 22 will hold its monthly membership meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Lewiston Armory, Senior Citizens Room, 65 Central Ave.

Auxiliary Unit 22 will meet at 5:15 pm.

A special segment of the meeting will be to remember Post 22 members who participated in the U.S. invasion of Iwo Jima in WWII.

Adjutant Jerry Der Boghosian will give an account of the invasion which started on Feb. 19, 1945.

There will be a 50/50 raffle. Prizes will be given.

A light buffet will be served by the Auxiliary.

2014 membership dues can be paid at the meeting.

Info meeting on new gym, track work

LISBON FALLS — On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the Lisbon School Department will hold a community informational night to provide an update on the Capital Plan and to share updated projected costs associated with building a new gymnasium and renovations to the track.

The meeting will take place at the Lisbon High School Gymnasium, 2 Sugg Drive, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Lisbon School Department will also be looking for public input in regard to moving forward with a potential bond referendum in June.
