“We are not setting a precedent, nor do we intend to continue the thing, but early next Monday morning if all property owners, who have been troubled with brush cut from trees being left on their grounds, will pile that brush up in some handy place, we will go around with a hay-rack and take it away,” was the announcement by City Forester Whittaker of Auburn. His explanation says: “We cut the brown tail nests from the trees of property owners at the lowest possible rate. The law does not specify that we pick up the brush after the nest has been taken from it. Moreover the city could not afford to do this at the rate it now charges for the work. But we do pile the brush up off from the sidewalk. If the property owners would only put the brush in barrels and place the barrels out on the day waste is collected it would be the duty of the waste collector to take it. Otherwise it is not.”

50 years ago, 1964
Lamey-Wellehan, a name that stands for shoes in Maine, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of their first shoe store at 110 Lisbon St., Lewiston. It was on St. Patrick’s Day, 1914, that the doors of the Lisbon St. shoe store first were opened. Today this store holds the record of being in business longer than any other store on Lisbon St. under the same management. Furthermore, Lamey-Wellehan’s is at exactly the same address, 110 Lisbon St., as it was half a century ago.

Androscoggin County Democrats reacted strongly Thursday to news that Gov. John R. McKernan needs another year to study color, odor and foam problems on Maine rivers. In a shift from previous positions, an administration staff lawyer signaled the Republican governor will move slowly on the issue at the request of paper companies. Maine paper companies would for the most part be footing any bill to improve the appearance of Maine rivers.
