POLAND — A sure sign of spring is the coming of Maine Maple Sunday, celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday in March. This year it falls on Sunday, March 23.

One of the more eventful local Maple Sunday celebrations is held annually at the Megquier Hill Farm at 260 Megquier Hill Road. The farm is the home of Peter and Kathie Bolduc and their four children. Nestled in the lower back field of this historic 1791 farmstead is their maple sugar house. Each year they welcome the public to come and experience the delight of the sap boiling down into maple syrup.

Their celebration starts at 9 a.m. and runs until about 3 p.m. Visitors are treated to a hay wagon ride down to the sugarhouse. Here they can enjoy a pancake breakfast for a small fee, served all day until 3 p.m.

All visitors are invited to take a free narrated tour of the sugar house to learn first-hand how the process works.

The local Grassholes Band will play their classic bluegrass music and songs.

Items for sale include candies, cotton candy, cookies, maple syrup and more, many of which are also available at the Harvest Hill Farms farm market on Route 26 at 5 Harvest Hill Way in Mechanic Falls.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides (wagon rides if there is not enough snow) will be offered free to visitors.
