PORTLAND — Zemya and Spoonmaker’s Diamond will offer a taste of world melodies from far corners of the planet when they bring their distinctive styles and unique talents to the St. Lawrence Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 18. Performing together for the second time, both groups share a passion for the unifying, energizing power of music.
Zemya is inspired by some of the world’s most colorful cultures with vocal selections from Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Georgia, Croatia, Israel, South Africa and the British Isles — music they interpret with their own lush and exquisite harmonies and infectious energy. Directed by Deborah Gordon, the ensemble includes Joy Ahrens, Barbara Beckelman, Hildy Ginsberg, Abby King, Mischa Schuler, and Ann Swardlick.
Spoonmaker’s Diamond plays authentic and entrancing tunes from Turkey, Armenia, Andalusia, the Balkans and the Middle East. The quartet includes Steve Carpenter on percussion, Barbara Truex, strings and vocals, Steve Gruverman on woodwinds, and Joanne Rawlings-Sekunda, vocals and percussion.
St. Lawrence Arts Center is at 75 Congress Street. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
