RUMFORD — The second annual Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Festival is happening on Saturday, May 10, in downtown Rumford (on the Island) and promises to be a day full of fun events and activities for all in celebration of Rumford’s heritage as a center for the wood products industry in Maine.

The festival will begin with a Lumberjack Breakfast at the American Legion, 184 Congress St., from 8 to 9 a.m.

The Lumberjack Parade starts at 10 and will include oxen, antique tractors, logging equipment displays and more.

There will be contests galore. Those that test strength and agility include the crosscut competition, ax throw, two person log race, Lumberjack and Lumberjill tug-a-war, arm wrestling contests and strongman competition tractor pull.

This year there are four categories of desserts for the dessert contest – cakes, pies, cookies/squares and sweets/candy. If you are more interested in eating desserts than making them, there will be a pie eating contest. And, you can throw pies, too. The big secret is who you get to throw them at.

The Paul Bunyan lookalike contest has been expanded to include a Lucette lookalike contest. She is Paul Bunyan’s girlfriend. Contest winners will get special carved wood prizes that are made by John Arsenault.

Paul Bunyan and the Lumberjacks will be back with lively music.

Kids will enjoy wagon rides, face painting, a hula hoop contest and creating their own tall tales.

The festival ends with the Flannel and Jeans Lumberjack Hoedown, a dinner and dance at the Eagles starting at 5:30 p.m.
