100 years ago, 1914
It appears that the strange acting man who has been prowling about the Bates campus goes well armed. This fact was brought out by a party of Bates students who decided they would chase the fellow off the grounds. They had only begun the chase when the strange acting individual drew a very dangerous looking gun and commanded the Bates boys to stand bark. And they stood. The police believe that the man is the “peeping Tom” who has been disturbing the residents of Wood street and vicinity.
50 years ago, 1964
An anti-merger vote was taken Tuesday night by the Lewiston Board of Aldermen which unanimously tossed aside a suggestion by Mayor Roland L. Marcotte to “at least explore the possibilities” of such a long-range proposal. Mayor Marcotte predicted afterward that, regardless of the board’s stand, his vision of Lewiston and Auburn becoming one city at some future date will become a reality. “I feel that we will find this merger proposal, on a step-by-step and year-by-year basis, will eventually become a reality just the same. Maybe not in my time, or at a time when the members of this board will be in office.”
25 years ago, 1989
Lisbon voters will return for the fifth session of the annual town meeting Monday at the high school gymnasium. The longest town meeting has ever lasted in Lisbon is five nights, and it is being projected this year it may set a new record at six.
