1932 – 2014
RUMFORD — Lester N. Averill Jr., 82, of Averill Hill Road in Dixfield, died Thursday evening, June 12, at Rumford Community Hospital with his sons at his side.
He was born in Dixfield on Feb. 11, 1932, a son of Lester N. and Rachel (Hiltz) Averill Sr., and received his education in Dixfield schools, graduating in 1950. On Sept. 11, 1951, he married Kathryn Tyler; she died on July 3, 2003.
They made their home in the West Palm Beach area in Florida, where he worked as an auto mechanic and service adviser at a local Pontiac dealer. They returned to Maine in 1974, when he owned and operated Averill’s Auto Salvage and worked as a mechanic.
Lester was a hardworking man, enjoying his farm and cutting wood.
He is survived by his two sons, Lester N. Averill III of Philadelphia, Pa., and David Averill of Rochester, N.H.; three grandchildren, Morey Averill of Philadelphia, Pa., Benjamin Averill of Portland and Jacob Averill of Rochester, N.H.; a brother, Thomas “Lynn” Averill, of Dixfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Betty and Claudia; and a brother, George.
