100 years ago, 1914
An extension of the Lewiston water service to Sabatis was discussed at a recent meeting of the water commission. Dr. Sleeper of Sabatis appeared before the board to report that 200 families at least in Sabatis would like the service. To do this about three miles of mains would have to be laid. With the redoubled capacity of the Lewiston pumping station that will result when the new pumps have been installed the extra burden could be taken care of easily.

50 years ago, 1964
An Interurban Day celebration will be held July 11 by the Gray Historical Society. The affair will mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the electric railroad, which ran between Lewiston and Portland and in its day was considered one of the finest of its type in the world. The society has obtained a list of persons who passed over the railroad on its trial run, June 26, before the road was opened formally July 2. The railroad ceased to function in 1933. At its height, it carried hundreds of passengers between Maine’s two largest communities at a fare of $1.

Diners on special diets or who are seeking ‘heart healthy’ menu selections should benefit from a new survey of local restaurants. The survey, conducted by the Androscoggin County division of the American Heart Association, is aimed at people who enjoy eating out but who are concerned about, among other things, cholesterol and fat levels in food. The Lewiston-Auburn Dining Out Guide lists 23 local restaurants and shows which ones offer such healthy alternatives as margarine, skim milk and fruit. It also lets people know if the restaurant broils or bakes fish or poultry instead of frying it.
