Lewiston street sprinkling system needs a shaking up according to the steps which are being taken to improve the service and put the department on a sound basis. Within a few days the present administration has paid a bill of approximately $2,200 to the Lewiston, Augusta & Waterville street railway for the street sprinkling done in 1913. The real cause of complaint is that no provision was made by the last city government to pay the bill nor to reach the abutters whose share was supposed to meet at least half of the bill. The streets sprinkled by the trolley car tank include Lisbon street to Bleachery hill, the Lewiston loop of the Figure 8, with the exception of the Skinner street section, and Main street to Saunders green house.

A cloud of smoke from forest fires in Quebec billowed over New England, cutting visibilities in some areas before drifting off to sea early Friday. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department received numerous calls from residents of Brownfield, Bethel, Newry, Otisfield and Norway reporting an odor of smoke and hazy air cutting visibility Thursday afternoon. The smoke came from about 33 forest fires burning in Quebec’s James Bay region. In New Hampshire, the Weather Service said visibility over northern Coos County also dropped considerably.
