The annual outing of Lewiston’s Chamber of Commerce will take place on Wednesday, July 15, at Tacoma Inn. This annual event is one of the big outings of the year. All business men in the city feel it a duty to go. They get a lot of fun out of it and it serves to bring them all nearer together in a social way, which is a good thing for business men. On the day of this annual outing all Lewiston stores will be closed so that clerks and proprietors can go on the trip. Special cars will be provided and the band will go along to help make the time merry. As usual there will be a fine program of sports. No one will be permitted to suffer from hunger as refreshments will be served continuously during the day, and it is assured that there will be a good time all the while.

(EDITORIAL) The twin city area received more excellent news last night with the announcement of the purchase of the former Androscoggin Division of the Bates Manufacturing Co. by a company which will produce woolens and yarn and will have between 500 and 600 employees when operating at full capacity. We cannot help but think back to the general prediction made by many different sources, and repeated so often that we inclined to share the same view, to the effect that idled textile plants such as the Continental and Androscoggin mills would be worthless in attracting new industry. Happily this prediction has proved wrong. Today more people are employed in the Continental Mills building in the diversified industries utilizing spare there than were working at the time the textile company announced its decision to cease operations.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has issued a draft “consent agreement” that contains harsh language and fines for local officials who allowed an illegal sludge dump to exist for years off River Road in Lewiston. The DEP has charged that for years that the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority has been in technical violation of state law. On Friday, Norm Lamie, newly elected chairman of the authority, labeled the draft agreement a “one-sided document.”
