This is in response to Barbara Cleary’s letter, printed June 13. Cleary was against same-sex marriage and blamed Gov. John Baldacci for going “behind voters’ backs.”
Strange. Rather it seems quite up front and courageous for a Catholic governor to stand up positively on an ethical civil rights issue, even when his bishop and other fundamentalist Christians are hung up on the word marriage.
Cleary said the petitioner claimed it wasn’t about same-sex marriage. Sure, and pigs and fly. That subterfuge sounds unethical to me.
The governor, with the majority of elected legislators, voted for the best interests and rights of all Mainers. Such a sneaky approach by the petitioner seems a backward way to hook frustrated Republicans against the governor and Legislature, who were expressing a breath of fresh air for equal rights for all.
