BRUNSWICK – Internationally renowned violist Roberto Diaz will perform Wednesday, April 1, at Bowdoin College.
He will be joined by pianist Andrew Tyson for a program to include Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole; Csaba Erdelyi’s arrangement of Johannes Brahms’ Sonata for Viola and Piano in D Major, Op. 78; Ernest Bloch’s Suite for Viola and Piano (1919); and William Primrose’s Transcriptions for Viola and Piano.
Diaz is president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. A native of Chile, he is the oldest of three siblings to attend the New England Conservatory of Music. He was formerly the principal violist of the National Symphony and the Philadelphia orchestras, and a member of the Boston Symphony and Minnesota orchestras.
He has received numerous awards and his 2006 recording of William Primrose’s Viola Transcriptions was nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance without Orchestra.
An active chamber musician, he is a member of the Diaz Trio, which has toured the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Chile and China.
