LEWISTON – Violinist Mary Hunter, pianist James Parakilas and cellist Steve Witkin will perform piano trios by Maurice Ravel and Franz Schubert Sunday, Feb. 8, at Bates College.
The concert is open to the public at no cost. It will begin at 3 p.m. in Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.
The musicians will perform Schubert’s Trio No. 1 in B-flat, composed in 1827, and Ravel’s Trio for Piano, Violin and Violoncello, composed in 1914.
“The Schubert is full of the unforgettable melodies, poetic moods and high drama of his songs,” said Parakilas. “Ravel, on the other hand, was one of the greatest masters of orchestral color, and here his orchestral effects are all the more miraculous because he achieves them with three instruments. One minute you think you are hearing moonlit dancing in the courtyard of the Alhambra palace – the next an archaic voice from the grave.”
Parakilas is the James L. Moody Jr. Family Professor of Performing Arts at Bates. He has given solo and ensemble performances throughout Maine. Hunter is the A. LeRoy Greason Professor of Music and chair of the music department at Bowdoin College. Witkin is principal cellist with the Colby Symphony Orchestra. The three musicians gave their first concert together last year.
