100 years ago, 1914
The passing of an ordinance in Auburn forbidding any resident to keep more than four children under four years of age not his or her own has aroused the interest of the Maine board of charities and corrections. The secretary of this board has requested that the board be supplied with a copy of the ordinance. It is the intention of the board, says the letter containing the request, to present before the legislature this winter a bill requiring that all babies’ boarding houses in the State be licensed.

50 years ago, 1964
As if a bankrupt snow removal account and a city full of snow-clogged streets weren’t enough trouble, Lewiston’s Public Works Department suffered a setback Monday that only added insult to injury. The city’s newest $6,500 snow blower was put out of action in the PWD yard during its first hour of work, even before it got to the streets. PWD Director George J. Maher said Monday night the new piece of equipment recently purchased for use on a front-end loader was disabled when it picked up a tooth broken from one of the city’s graders and hidden in the snow in the PWD yard on Willow Street. He said the new blower was being tested out clearing the yard before it took to the streets for a heavy duty workout.

25 years ago, 1989
The Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport has been designated a general aviation reliever for the Portland Jetport, giving the local facility chances at more funding and increased business. Executive Director Marshall MacKinen has sought the status for the airport for the past six months, and told directors of the facility Thursday that the Federal Aviation Administration granted the classification last month. “It means more funds, more recognition and more activity,” MacKinen said. “It’s designed to attract more general aviation and business aviation to the airport.”
