Lewiston business people seem to have no idea of clearing the sidewalks on Lisbon Street until they get good and ready. Anywhere from eight until the middle of the forenoon suits them but it’s anything but agreeable to pedestrians. For instance, Monday morning, at quarter past eight or later a young woman was much bespattered with muddy water in front of a well known store, the man with the scraper being too much occupied in his work to even stop while people passed. He did come to long enough to say, in a matter-of-fact way, “Excuse me!”

50 years ago, 1958

Recognition of six Twin City eating or lodging establishments has been given by the Duncan Hines Institute. The DeWitt Hotel, Elm Hotel, Stardust Motel, Flamingo Motel, Redwood Motel and Pineland Motel have been listed in the 1959 editions of either the Adventures in Good Eating or Lodging for a Night, both of which have been issued by the institute.

25 years ago, 1983

Lewiston attorney James B. Longley Jr. was honored Friday night as The Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Lewiston-Auburn Jaycees. Longley was chosen from among five nominees, on the basis of personal and civic accomplishment and contributions to the community.

By winning the Lewiston-Auburn award, Longley was also named that group’s nominee for the Maine Jaycee Outstanding Young Man. The winner of that competition will be chosen in January. The top three state vote-getters will go on to the national contest.

Longley is chairman of the Gov. James B. Longley Scholarship Foundation, vice president of the Lewiston-Auburn Chamber of Commerce, director of Tri-County Mental Health Services and a trustee of the Lewiston Public Library.
