Lewiston men interested in the ice business are anxiously waiting for the river to freeze over. The usual amount of ice cut in Lewiston and Auburn is as follows: From the Lewiston side of the Androscoggin, 10,000 tons; Auburn side of the river, 3,000; New Auburn side of Little Androscoggin, 2,500; Lake Auburn, 6,700. Besides this amount, the E.W. Penley Co. and the Turner Center Creamery cut about 3,000 tons each yearly for their own use.

50 years ago, 1958

An unbeatable Acme Snowshoe Club of Lewiston drum and bugle corps took first place honors during the weekend in Augusta and Lewiston competition.

The corps participated against other Maine snowshoe club organizations at Augusta Saturday night in a parade and social event which took the lid off the 1958-59 snowshoe program, and was awarded first place honors.

Local organizations taking part in the Augusta activities besides Acme were Le Montagnard, Le Dames Montagnard, Pastime, Le Dames Pastime, Jacques Cartier and Aimee Choises. Also on hand, Paresseur Snowshoe Club of Rumford.

25 years ago, 1983

MECHANIC FALLS – Bill Dunlop is sailing across the Caribbean Sea this week after a week-long stay in Kingston, Jamaica. He sailed out of Kingston at about 11 a.m. Monday and his wife, Pamela, said Tuesday that her husband expects to arrive at Panama in about 10 days.

After that it’s across the Pacific to the Marquesas Islands, American Samoa and the Fiji Islands for resupply stops before heading for Sydney, Australia.
