Most of the kids and some of the older ones are hiking out after nuts these days, and the weather is such that they return happy if they never see even an acorn tree. In a few places chestnuts are to be found, and there are also butternuts in big brown cases, “hog” nuts, beechnuts, hazel nuts, and what are more common but highly prized, white oak acorns.
• Mechanic Falls sent a delegation to “The Devil” Wednesday night. A green scum covers much of the surface of Barkerville Pond in Lewiston and the same thing is happening in sections of Sabattus Pond, according to reports.
It is believed that the scum condition is due to an algae present in the water this year due to the continued high water.
The condition has been present at Barkerville Pond for about three weeks and a Lewiston man who has his boat at Sabattus Pond said the condition there is much worse this year than in previous seasons. He also said that weed conditions are much worse this year in the Long Beach section of Sabattus.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department corrections staff has completed a federally funded in-service training program, says Sheriff Joseph P. Laliberte. Laliberte said the deputies have been tested on the material that was covered and scored well on the 50-question examination.
All of the deputies passed the test, and all of the supervisory staff received scores of 92 percent or better, Laliberte said. Sgt. John Lebel, a shift supervisor at the County Jail, received a letter of commendation for the perfect score he received on the test.
The training program was conducted by a representative of the U.S. Department of Justice National Institute of Corrections.
