This is in response to the “Making up for snow days” article (March 4).

I am sure the intention of the proposed legislation is to be helpful, but adding an hour to a school day is unlikely to extend the academic environment effectively.

I have been serving as a teacher assistant in the Auburn public schools for the past three years. (I do not belong to the MEA.) During that time, I have noticed that schedule changes are invariably disruptive to the students, for a number of social and logistical reasons.

There are also several after-school activities, both academic and cultural, that would be interrupted by the proposed plan.

Most importantly, it is unreasonable to expect students, especially the younger ones, to concentrate fully for an additional hour at the end of a long school day.

The proposed plan could add additional homework, while taking away an hour to complete homework already assigned.
