WAYNE — The Maranacook String Band will return to Wayne’s Ladd Center for a concert on at 6 p.m., on Sunday, April 26. This show will feature the singing of newest string band member Wayne’s own Dana Reynolds, a student at Maranacook Middle School.

The band started in 2009, when Stan Keach, a teacher of gifted/talented students at Maranacook, started meeting regularly with three talented young singer/musicians; soon they were playing gigs all over central Maine. They recorded a critically-praised CD called “Bear in the Barn” in 2010, and another CD in 2012.

Most of the original members have gone off to college. Besides Keach and Dan Simons, a mandolinist and an MCHS grad, bassist Julie Churchill, a UMO senior who grew up in Fayette, still sings regularly with the band, and Max Silverstein, a Bangor High School senior, plays the fiddle.

MSB describes its music as acoustic Americana with a strong bluegrass element, and many songs are about Maine. They are known for tight three-part vocal harmony and virtuoso instrumental solos. The songwriting of Keach, a nationally-known songwriter, and the lead singing of Churchill and Reynolds are also strengths.

This concert will benefit the Cary Memorial Library. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Delicious refreshments (homemade soups and desserts) will be available for purchase. Local favorites Chris Cushman and Ellen Smith will open the show with a set of Irish fiddle tunes.
