RUMFORD – On Friday, Sept. 21, Friends of the Rumford Library will offer the 1946 Alfred Hitchcock classic “Notorious.” Part of the National Film Registry, “Notorious” and has earned high acclaim in movie history.
Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant play American agents trying to infiltrate a group of Nazi spies. The carefully crafted plot pits a harsh T.R. Devlin (Grant) against an increasingly sympathetic Alicia Huberman (Bergman), a woman with a tainted past who is willing to sacrifice everything to succeed in her espionage mission.
Escalating dangers and expressive cinematography create breathtaking suspense, perhaps most notably in the now-famous wine-cellar scene when the sounds of the champagne party begin to signal impending discovery of the two agents.
Claude Rains plays the Nazi spy who is infatuated with Alicia.
The film screening and refreshments are free to the public. Running time is 102 minutes, beginning at 7 p.m. in the library’s downstairs public room.
