PORTLAND – “BlueGreen,” a feature-length documentary exploring our ties to the ocean, by local director Ben Keller and production company Dubious Honor, will be screened Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Space Gallery.
Through the profiles and stories of 13 subjects, the viewer is taken on a journey of discovery that goes far beyond the ordinary and obvious. These profiles are set to a visual tapestry of surf, sea and sound.
While shot in many places, much of the action footage was shot locally. In addition, Don Perkins of the Gulf Of Maine Research Center speaks about the importance of the Gulf of Maine, and lobsterman/surfer Mike Beauregard talks about the power of the gulf on his life.
Other personalities in the film include seven-time women’s world champion surfer Layne Beachley, free surfer Keith Malloy and Robert August. Also interviewed are activists, religious leaders, evolutionary theorists and all types of watermen and women.
The soundtrack for the film was also created locally, with music provided by Portland’s own Seekonk, Harpswell Sound, Cerberus Shoal, Greenhead and The Baltic Sea.
Although the focus is on surfing, the film will appeal to surfers and nonsurfers alike, said Keller. “It gets to the heart of what we are all about, and ‘BlueGreen’ is a fun and thoughtful exploration of that.”
The screening will be at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 at the door, and each entry automatically gets entered into a raffle for a new surfboard. Space Gallery is at 538 Congress St.
