CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will host the band Giveway, four Scottish sisters who mix Scottish traditional and folk music, Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center.

The concert, featuring lively jigs with folk-jazz and modern songs with haunting airs, will begin at 7 p.m. A preshow jam session will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Making up the band are Fiona Johnson, fiddle, guitar, piano, whistle and vocalist; Kirsty Johnson, piano, accordion and vocalist; Amy Johnson, drums and accordion; and Mairi Johnson, piano/keyboard, bass and vocalist.

From an early age, music was at the heart of all that the four sisters did. At age 5, Fiona started playing the fiddle; Kirsty picked up an accordion at age 4; Amy was 5 when she started playing the accordion; and Mairi was playing the piano and keyboard at age 6.

As they grew up, the sisters developed their own unique musical talents, playing solo and with other musicians in bands and in competitions.

In the years since the sisters joined forces, Giveway has won awards at the acclaimed Scottish music festival Celtic Connections; received BBC Radio 2 Young Folk awards; and performed on numerous radio shows, on TV and at a series of high profile venues, including the main stage at the Cambridge Folk Festival.

The band has also supported top musical acts, including Karen Matheson, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, and performed alongside Cherish the Ladies, Natalie MacMaster, Kate Rusby and Fiddler’s Bid.

Giveway’s debut album, “Full Steam Ahead,” was released in 2003 to international acclaim. Its new 11-track album, “Inspired,” is schedued for release in November. As the title suggests, it features an inspirational collection of music covering various styles: traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, foot-tapping and jazzy folk songs, rock-inspired jigs and songs written by acclaimed Scottish artists, including Phil Cunningham and John McCusker.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Skye Theatre is at 2 Highland Drive. Call New England Celtic Arts, 562-4445, for reservations. More information, visit www.necelticarts.com.
