FARMINGTON — The second annual Trash Can Couture Fashion Show will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in Lincoln Auditorium at the Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Sponsored by Kingfield Girl Scout Troop No. 54, the proceeds from this event will go back into the community through service projects, troop leader Madison Kangas said.
“This year we will be using the money to buy toiletries for the United Economic Ministries in Salem,” she said. “We are also hoping to raise enough money to help purchase supplies for the construction of a handicap ramp for their food pantry.”
Each contestant designs her own dress made from trash bags. Last year many of the girls added duct tape, balloons, feathers and ribbon to their dresses. “Many of the designs were simply amazing,” Kangas said.
Contestants walk the runway to music and model their dresses in front of three judges.
“It is a lot of fun, and the support along with cheering coming from the crowd is amazing,” Kangas said. “It is wonderful to see an otherwise shy and less confident girl take the runway with a smile due to all the cheering and encouragement. We even have an occasional father don a trash bag dress and walk the runway.”
Four age groups will compete for first- and second-place prizes in each group. The dresses are judged on creativity and originality. An after-party will feature food by Ellie Rain Cakes and music by DJ Warlock.
Judges this year are Tammy Goldfrank, Longfellow Restaurant; Amy Alexcovich, DMD, Strong Dental Clinic; and Tammie Gould, administrative assistant/manager, United Economic Ministries in Salem.
All are welcome to attend.
