BETHEL – This town is known for its historic past, quaint New England charm, outdoor recreation, moose sightings and Corvettes … Corvettes?

A sports car icon, Corvettes have been rolling off American assembly lines into the hearts and imaginations of enthusiasts worldwide since 1953. They are part of the fabric of the good old USA.

For four days, Aug. 16-19, Bethel will present its inaugural Maine Mountain Corvette Festival, celebrating all things Corvette. Members of more than 40 Corvette cubs from all over the Northeast have been invited and will drive their gleaming machines into town to enjoy a car show, parade, scenic drives, a lobster bake and the camaraderie of Corvette enthusiasts.

Event headquarters and the main venue will be the Bethel Town Common, with the Corvette Show & Shine scheduled for Saturday Aug. 18. Here, Corvettes from each of the six generations (1953 to present) will be displayed in a competition for best of show in various categories as decided by the public and enthusiasts at large. Both Saturday’s Show & Shine and accompanying lobster bake are open to the public. Admission to the Show & Shine, scheduled from noon to 3:30 p.m., is free.

The lobster bake will be held under a tent on the common. It includes a 1¼-pound lobster, steamed clams, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, rolls, and blueberry pie. Cost: $38 per person. Prepayment and advance reservations must be made by Tuesday, Aug. 14, by calling the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce at 824-2282. Credit cards of all types will be accepted.

The event will wraps up Sunday, Aug. 19, with a Corvette parade in the village and dancing and live music provided by the Blue Willow Band at 4 p.m. in the town gazebo.
