100 years ago, 1915
Something was doing Tuesday forenoon at Hillman’s ferry in Livermore Falls when Boardman Knox started to ferry an Auburn gentleman and his team across the river. The wind was blowing a gale when Mr. Knox pushed the ferry boat out into the river and this, coupled with current, pulled hard on the cable which spans the river. All went well, however, until the cable slipping up over the rolls, got away from Knox, when the ferry boat, loaded with the two men and team, went sailing down river with the wind and current. It seemed impossible for those on board to make a landing and things were beginning to look bad with the rapids at Huntoon’s Rips looming up in the distance. Fortunately at a slight bend in the river they managed to swing the boat into an eddy where it grounded. Several men, with poles and oars, were occupied a long time in getting the ferry boat back to its landing over a half mile up stream.
50 years ago, 1965
Mrs. May Craig, one of the nation’s outstanding newspaper women, will speak at the Central Maine General Hospital Annual Appreciation Dinner at the Poland Spring Inn Thursday night. Mrs. Craig, who will discuss her experiences as correspondent for the Gannett newspapers of Maine, is a frequent guest on the nationally televised “Meet the Press” program. Her column “Inside in Washington” has appeared on the editorial page of the Portland Press Herald for more than 25 years.
25 years ago, 1990
The Fresh Air Fund is looking for families in Lewiston-Auburn interested in hosting inner-city children for two weeks, July 19 to Aug. 2. Every year, children from New York City who have been selected to participate are brought to Maine by bus. Most of the children, ages 6 to 12, are from black Harlem, Spanish Harlem and the Bronx. The children will be staying with their host families for nearly a month, returning home on Aug. 16.
