LIVERMORE FALLS — The Treat Memorial Library Summer Reading Program theme is “Every Hero Has a Story,” celebrating heroes from the most famous superheros to historical figures to community helpers.

The kick-off event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, when the Mandalorian Mercs Star Wars Costuming Club will attend for a day of games, food, photo opportunities, and prizes.

The kick-off will be followed by 6 p.m. Thursday programs starting June 25. Activities will include stories, games, crafts and special guests, who will include local heroes.

Chewonki’s Traveling Natural History Program will visit Thursday, July 16, to present “Hero Adaptations,” a look at the animals that have inspired some of the world’s best loved superheroes.

The finale will feature a special animal hero, “Daisy, the world’s most famous pig,” known for encouraging the love of reading across the country. Participants will have the opportunity to be heroes themselves by participating in a summer-long food drive.

Food for Fines Month will be held during June, when the library will accept nonperishable food instead of late fines.  Bring in canned food or boxes of dry foods to have those fines forgiven. All food will be taken to the Food Cupboard.

The library is conducting a fundraiser in which there are 30 cash prizes – one for each day in June. Tickets are one for $5 or three for $10, available at the library or from some trustees around town. Prizes vary from $10 to $50. All monies will go to replace library furniture.

The Spring Book Club continues its series on Maine authors. Local author and group member Diane Taylor-Moore Hines shared her book, “Here Sits A Monkey,” at the last meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 11. Those wanting a copy of the next book to be discussed should contact Assistant Director Brianna Rush.

A homeschool meeting will take place at 3 p.m. Monday, June 18. All ages are welcome and there will be activities.

The Teen Writing Group will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesdays, June 9 and 23. Learn about opportunities and get advice from visiting writers.

The last Saturday Family Story Time for the summer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6. Preschool Story Time will continue through the summer at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. The Knit/Crochet Group will have the final meeting before the summer at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23.
