1925 – 2015
GORHAM — Ethelynn N. “Norma” DeCosta, 89, of Gorham, passed away on Friday, May 15, at the Gorham House Cottage with many beloved friends by her side.
Born on Dec. 1, 1925, she was the daughter of Jarvis and Jennie Hand. Norma grew up in Etna with her parents and siblings, Eugene, Kenneth, George and Frances. She married Joseph E. Decosta in 1947, and they spent 30 years together living in Portland, until Joey passed in 1977. Little more is known of her life prior to moving to Rumford Community Home in 2011 after being homeless for many years.
In 2013, Norma moved to the Cottage at Gorham House. In coming to the Cottage, she found love, joy, serenity, a home and a family. She was a very sweet, loving lady who found joy in all living creatures, from feeding the birds and squirrels outside her room, to the unit dog and bunny, both of whom she truly adored. Though she spent the majority of her days in her room, she enjoyed watching over others, participating in the daily activities and listening to music.
She will be greatly missed by her surrogate family of the Cottage at Gorham House, where her memory will forever remain in the hearts and souls of the residents and staff.
