BETHEL – Western Mountains Senior Players will present a fun-filled spring production of eight one-act plays Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15, at Gould Academy’s McLaughlin Science Center Auditorium.

Among the plays to be performed are “The Cactus Juice Saloon,” by Jean Vetter and “Medea,” by Christopher Durang and Wendy Wasserstein. “The Cactus Juice Saloon” is a funny play about the Old West and features Rosabelle Tifft as Miss Lacey, owner of the saloon; Ross Timberlake as Lefty, a cowboy who pays a visit to the saloon and meets a dancing saloon girl, Susannah, played by Karen Paul; and Joe Arizzi as Sheriff Stoutheart, who reveals a big secret about Lefty.

The lead role in “Medea,” a comedy with the same storyline as the Greek tragedy, is played by Joanne Morse, with the ever-present Greek chorus played by Mary Colbath, Arita Zitoli, Karen Paul, Rosabelle Tifft, Mary-Ellen Gartner and Carole Timberlake. Jason, Medea’s husband, is played Ross Timberlake, the Messenger by Joe Arizzi and the Deus ex machina (angel) by Roberta Taylor.

The remaining six one-act plays include “Joan,” by Robert Mauro; “Soap Opera,” by David Ives; “The Death of the Hired Man,” by Robert Frost; “The Sunshine Boys,” by Neil Simon; “The Odd Couple,” by Neil Simon; and “If Sherlock Holmes Were a Woman,” by Tim Kelly.

Cast members who appear in one or more of the plays include Arizzi, Tifft, the Timberlakes and Taylor, all of Bethel; Colbath and Morse of Waterford; Peter and Mary-Ellen Gartner of Bryant Pond; Sharon Lyon, Paul and Lorrie Hoeh of Bethel; Zitoli of Rumford; and Walter Brough of Greenwood.

Lynn Arizzi, an experienced director, has attempted to place the new and veteran amateur thespians in plays where they can showcase their best talents. She said players carry their scripts with them, and no memorization of lines is required. However, as in all theater companies, the players follow stage directions, use props and develop the characters they are portraying. “The players challenge themselves in the art of theater and seem to have a great time at rehearsals,” Arizzi said.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

Admission is free, however, donations will be gratefully accepted to honor royalty fees.
