The Orpheon Society, Lewiston, sang their way into fame again, Wednesday on the annual jaunt of the society. This time the excursion included a trip to Portland on the Interurban, a sail Into Casco Bay of the Aucocisco, landing and a dinner at Orr’s Island, and a supper at the Elks Home, Portland. The start was made from Lewiston at 8.15 and after a day of amusing experiences, capped by singing for the people at the New Cape theatre, the club returned after midnight, having celebrated July 14, the national holiday of the French nation, in a fitting manner.

Local business leaders plan to meet Friday morning to take a stand on proposed Maine Turnpike changes that are under review by state environmental officials. James Saunders, president of the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, said Thursday that members have become concerned that questions raised about widening the southern end of the turnpike “have become too political in nature, rather than based on real concern.” “We’re concerned that at this late date that there’s even a question that (the widening) might not go ahead,” Saunders said.
