CANTON — A late-night fire swept through a former tire business and destroyed an attached, unoccupied home Monday evening, according to officials.
The former Canton Tire automotive business at 81 School St. was leveled, along with a two-story farmhouse, according to Canton fire Chief Shane Gallant.
Gallant identified the owner as Canton resident Donald Ulmer, whom he said was not living at the home and had closed the home-based business. It was stocked with used tires, air compressors, parts and other automotive accessories at the time.
There were no injuries to firefighters.
The fire appears to have begun in the garage at around 10:45 p.m. From there, it spread to the rest of the building. The fire does not appear to be suspicious and an investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was en route to investigate, Gallant said.
Firefighters from Canton, Peru, Rumford, Dixfield and Mexico responded to the fire, which was under control by about midnight.
