100 years ago, 1915
Walter F. Estes and his wife, both 26 years old, of Gray, will plunge into the big woods in the vicinity to live the primeval life. They will wear a more modest costume than the proverbial fig adornment but will provide practically all clothes, shelter and food from the forest. Estes, who has been given the name of “The Harvester,” because of his familiarity with curing qualities of herbs, has had experience in this life as has his wife. He has been training for this since July 7. He has eaten neither bread nor vegetable since. They have spent 28 days in the woods depending upon their own resources.

50 years ago, 1965
Lewiston’s political pot began heating up a bit today, and former Lewiston Mayor Ernest Malenfant did it. The former mayor, who this morning was among prospective candidates for municipal office to take out nomination papers, said: “If the present administration returns to office, Lewiston is in for the hardest year in history.” Malenfant secured his papers from Lewiston this morning, but did not indicate what office, if any, he will seek, in Lewiston’s November 29 election. Malenfant predicted: “If the same administration is re-elected in this year’s election, the tax rate will go up 10 to 15 mills next year.”

25 years ago, 1990
About 200 high school students from five area schools attended the third annual orientation session for students involved in the Androscoggin Valley Program for the Gifted and Talented, held at Oak Hill High School in Wales Thursday night. Students from Oak Hill, Lewiston, Edward Little, Lisbon and Leavitt Area high schools heard an address by Bates College psychology professor Drake Bradley. Bradley discussed the role of technology in education and used a Macintosh computer to demonstrate what can he accomplished with technology.
