Something now in this locality, in the way of a musical instrument, is the folding organ. It will be played for the first time in Lewiston streets, Wednesday, when the Salvation Army will begin a special series of open-air concerts in celebration of the great harvest carnival. The folding organ, so Capt. Wood says, looks like a large extension traveling bag, When the “traveling bag” is opened up it makes a good sized organ and the volume is large. “People stop with surprise when they hear it,” says the Capt., “and wonder where on earth that organ music is coming from.”

50 years ago, 1965

The parking lot looked like the entire shopping center was open, not just one store, which would appear to be an early indication that T.J. Maxx would experience a very productive first day of business. The Framingham, Mass.-based store opened its doors at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Auburn Plaza on Center Street with brief remarks by manager Ann Marie Doane and a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Auburn Mayor Richard Trafton, “We welcome T.J. Maxx to the city of Auburn,” Trafton said before he snipped the bright red ribbon in half.
