Accepting the daily dietary standards which are based upon observations as to what people are accustomed to consume, it is plain that the average man doing from light to moderate muscular work must take each day approximately 116 grams of protein matter (18 grams of nitrogen), with sufficient fat and carbohydrate to yield a total fuel value of 3,050 large calories. The usual proportion of carbohydrate (mostly starchy food) is about 500 grams to 50-60 grams of fat.

In other words, the average man needs, according to the above hypothesis, approximately 120 grams of protein, 500 grams of carbohydrate and 60 grams of fat for his daily ration.

A snowstorm added a white blanket to the Twin Cities yesterday morning and washed out the Veterans Day parade but ceremonies in remembrance of the war dead were conducted.

John M. Robertson of Lewiston, American Legion department chaplain, gave a brief address at the soldier’s monument at Lewiston city park before a small gathering as a light rain dropped from an overcast sky.

Robertson said,” We honor here today the boys who prayed together, worshipped together, fought together and died together so that we may live together.”

Braving freezing temperatures, gusty winds, and scattered snow flurries, thousands of Mainers attended parades and memorial services Tuesday in honor of America’s war veterans.

Veterans groups and marching bands, attracted large crowds to Veterans Day parades in Portland, Bangor, Lewiston and Waterville.

In South Portland, veterans rang a bell struck from shell fragments gathered from World War I battlefields.

At 11 a.m., amid the peal of church bells and the howled fire sirens, the bell was rung 11 times – marking the signing of the World War I armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1928. The bell was loaned to organizers of the ceremony by its Auburn owner.
