The fall term of the Bliss College, Lewiston opened yesterday morning, with the largest enrollment of student since this well known business college was founded. There are an unusually large number of out of town students here, while the number of local students has been gradually increasing from year to year.

The college apartments have been renovated during the summer vacation and everything has been placed in first class condition and many improvements made. The college is one of the best equipped and most modern in New England and experienced teachers of high repute are employed in all of the departments.

50 Years Ago, 1955

When the Montgomery Ward and Co.’s 83rd anniversary sale begins this week in its nearly 600 retail stores, the Lewiston branch also will be celebrating its 25th year of serving the public in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Donald J. Semeraro, manager of the local Ward’s outlet since last May, declared: “Ward’s still follows the generous policies laid down by A. Montgomery Ward in 1872 and the high standards of quality and value in the merchandise we sell are unchanged.”

25 Years ago, 1980

TURNER – There are two sure ways to tell that fall has arrived in Maine. The first is the sight of orchards covered with bright red apples and the second is the arrival of the Jamaicans to pick them.

The pickers for L & P Orchards in Turner arrived on Sept. 11 and began picking on the 17th. There are 50 in all, 5 Puerto Ricans and 45 Jamaicans. This is the first trip to Maine for 17 of 45, and they had various reactions.

They think the people are friendly but can’t believe there are so few of us for the amount of land we have here! The climate also provoked some comments, since it is much cooler here than in Jamaica.

The men have various occupations when home. They are masons, farmers, carpenters, truck drivers and artisans.
