1938 – 2016

RUMFORD — Sheridan V. Thornton, 77, died on Wednesday, Jan. 6, in Rumford. He was a resident of Route 232 in Rumford.

He was born in Rumford on March 12, 1938. Sheridan (Sher) was the son of Howard and Barbara (Wentworth) Thornton. He attended Rumford schools. Sher and his brother Charles owned and operated Thornton Farms in Rumford Corner since 1959. They were known for raising chickens, tree farming and excavating. He was also a local bus driver for SAD 43 for more than 44 years. Sher also plowed multiple roads for the towns of Rumford and Milton.

He was a longtime volunteer fireman for the Rumford Point Fire Department. He loved working with heavy equipment, which included putting in septic systems and plowing roads and driveways. He also loved spending time at his camp in Poland on Tripp Lake.

He was married in Rumford on Dec. 12, 1959, to Jeannine Cloutier who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include a son, Glenn Thornton and his wife, Kristine Dorer, of Scarborough; a daughter, Lisa McReavy and her companion, Brian Edwards, of Hermon; two granddaughters, Shaelyn and Meagan Thornton of Scarborough; Lisa’s stepchildren, Misty Slomienski of Lincoln and Jared McReavy of Lee; a brother, Charles of Rumford; and many nieces and nephews.
