OXFORD — Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District is once again offering a list of native plants for beginning to advanced gardeners throughout Oxford County and the surrounding area.
This year’s list includes choices of flowering perennials, ferns, vines, groundcovers, edible plants and trees. A special section has been devoted to native erosion control and wildlife support plants. There are old favorites such as columbine, butterfly weed, lobelia, elderberry, pussy willow, virginbower, yellowroot and sweetfern, several varieties of low bush and highbush blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries.
Both deciduous and evergreen tree seedlings are offered in the sale, with an emphasis on native species which are not host trees for the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle. Native conservation gardening supports native wildlife, including pollinators, plant-eating insects and fruit-eating birds. For more information about gardening with native plants, go to www.wildflower.org.
The native plant order form is available by contacting the OCSWCD at 207-743-5789, ext. 111, or by emailing [email protected]. Information sheets are also available for specific plantings by area and type: native plants, plants for fruit display, plants for wet areas, plants for fragrance, plants for rain garden areas, plants for dry areas and plants for hummingbird and butterfly gardens.
All orders must be received by Saturday, April 30. The pick-up day is Saturday, May 7, at the Hooker Family Farm Open House, 195 Pleasant St.
