BETHEL – On Sunday, June 20, at noon, the streets of Bethel will be the track for the third annual Summer Solstice Sculpture Race. Entry forms must be postmarked by June 10.

Artists, artisans, students, sculpture buffs, craftsmen, tinkers, ironworkers, welders, woodworkers, sculptors, engineers and creative people of all persuasions are being encouraged to create art for the race.

There will be five prizes: fastest, most aesthetically pleasing, most mechanically ingenious and most humorous; and an “under 12” division for kids. Prizes will include trophies created by master potter Woody Hughes.

This creative and competitive race will be a great spectacle for onlookers, organizers said.

The criteria for the sculpture race entries are:

• Human-powered (no motors, batteries, solar cells, windmills, sails or other means of propulsion).

• Must move: roll, walk or run.

• Can be pushed, pedaled, pulled or otherwise (but not dragged or carried).

• Must incorporate wheels, legs or other means of movement.

• Can’t be floats, bicycles, wagons, or pre-manufactured wheeled vehicles or devices (You have to make it.).

• Created and raced by individuals or teams.

• Use of recycled materials and “found objects” is encouraged.

• May not be existing sculpture, must be newly created.

• Sculptures may not contain advertising.

• Height limit: under 13 feet 6 inches (state law) (watch out for the power lines!).

• Width limit: 8 feet 6 inches (state law).

The Summer Solstice Sculpture Race will be followed by the Midsummer Festival, featuring music, medieval knights in armor, crafts and morris dancers.
