PARIS — Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris will celebrate National Nursing Home Week from May 8 to 14.

National Nursing Home Week is a way for modern care communities to proactively communicate that health care centers are not “grandma’s nursing home,” which they were once thought of. It’s a week dedicated to residents, staff and families to show all that’s offered in services.

Special daily events are planned for the staff and residents.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “It’s a Small World with a Big Heart.”

Among planned events for this week’s celebration are a ladies’ tea on Mother’s Day, a movie night with a buffet dinner, and a cookout for all staff and residents.

There will be a dunk tank in which volunteer staff will wait to be dunked into a pool of water. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills. A gift of cat food or $3 gives the contestant three chances to dunk the staff person.

A play will be performed by housekeeping/laundry for the residents’ and staff enjoyment.
