SOUTH PORTLAND — Adults in southern Maine who are affected by hereditary breast, ovarian and related cancers are invited to attend a free showing of “In the Family,” a documentary by Joanna Rudnick, a filmmaker who has tested positive for the BRCA gene, which greatly increases the risk of breast cancer.
This film chronicles the stories of families undergoing genetic testing, the decisions they make as a result, and the impact those decisions have on their lives.
The film will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St., South Portland. Those people interested in this topic are invited to view the film and stay afterward for a panel discussion. This will also be an opportunity to meet members of the local FORCE group, a national organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. This event is offered in collaboration with “POV,” PBS’ award-winning nonfiction film series.
FORCE, which stands for Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, holds meetings at the Cancer Community Center that offer attendees a chance to learn from other people who are navigating the hereditary cancer path, helping others by sharing stories and gaining information from presentations by specialists.
FORCE meetings will be facilitated by local genetic counselors Jessica Cary of New England Cancer Specialists and Katherine Lafferty of Maine Medical Center.
