LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has announced its upcoming September classes:
One-on-One, One-Hour Class: Researching Your Family History: Tuesday, Sept. 6 or 13. Classes held at 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., noon or 1:15 p.m. Researcher Carroll N. Holmes will use several genealogical websites to find people on each participant’s family tree. Those researching should bring any information that can be researched, such as names, dates and places.
Defining Your Legacy: Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Instructor Chloe JonPaul will ask the class how they want to be remembered and help participants discover how to define their legacies and decide what really should be passed to family and friends.
Maine Author Series:Thursday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Co-author Ernest G. DeRaps will present the book, “Lighthouse Keeping and Light Housekeeping.” DeRaps will speak about the lifestyle of light keeping from both the lightkeeper’s perspective and that of the lightkeeper’s wife.
How to Make a Button Bracelet: Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon with instructor Fern Doiron. Registration is required because the class size is limited. The cost for supplies is $8.
Using Windows 10: Wednesday, Sept. 14 or 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. with Tim Verrill, SeniorsPlus, network and facilities manager. This class is geared toward those who already have Microsoft Windows 10 and want to get the most out of it. He will discuss new features, what’s changed in Windows 10, how to work the menu, settings, security, Windows store and updates.
Shiloh: Frank W. Sandford and The Kingdom: Thursday, Sept. 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with retired educator Bill Hiss. Due to high interest, this is a repeat of the August class. The Kingdom movement was part of the 19th- and early-20th- century effort to evangelize the world. The community lasted until 1920. The Kingdom still exists as an evangelical movement. The original Shiloh sanctuary building in Durham is still in use for Christian services.
Alzheimer’s Storytelling Project: Thursday, Sept. 15 from 3 to 4 p.m. with Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter. Let us help you tell your life story. Do you have memory challenges? Alzheimer’s? This program is designed to have volunteer scribes talk with and write the life stories of participants — people who are living with dementia. In turn, participants help educate future health care professionals about Alzheimer’s. Participation is completely confidential.
Medicare Basics: Thursday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with SeniorsPlus representatives. For those new to Medicare, already on Medicare or who are going on Medicare in the near future, this course will teach the basics and timelines of this complex system, when to sign up for what, and ways to save money.
Mindful Meditation & Movement: Friday, Sept. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. with Tisha Bremner, Inner Light Yoga of Maine. This will be an introduction to mindful meditation and movement. Mindfulness is the practice of living and being in the moment, which has highly valuable benefits to our health and well-being. Participants will explore present moment awareness, breath techniques, meditation, and easeful movements to help relieve stress and tension. A six-week session detailed in this story will start Friday, Sept. 30.
AARP Smart Driver: Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with AARP representatives. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. Participants should bring their driver’s licenses and lunch. The cost is $20 payable to AARP or $15 for AARP members who present a membership card.
Incontinence and Bladder Control: Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. with Dr. Kathleen Martin, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Aging has its challenges — one of them may be always trying to find a bathroom. This conversation will answer questions and teach when it may be time to seek help.
Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Kindle?: Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon with Jill Spencer of BoomerTECH. A Kindle is more than a device to read books. In this hands-on class, users will explore the ways to navigate their Kindle, accessing the internet and apps, and the various deals offered to Kindle users. Participants should bring their fully charged Kindle to class.
Dementia Conversations: Thursday, Sept. 29, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with Alzheimer’s Association representatives. This program will offer helpful tips to assist families with difficult conversations related to dementia, including going to the doctor, deciding when to stop driving and making legal and financial plans. Topics include: tips for having difficult conversations around some of the most common issues that arise regarding Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia; the need to plan ahead and build a care team that communicates well in order to reduce the stress that can accompany a disease like Alzheimer’s; connecting with helpful resources to enhance quality of life for everyone involved; and hearing from people who are dealing with similar issues.
Magnificent Canyons: Thursday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with Alan Elze. Without leaving Lewiston, Elze will take travelers to see two Arizona canyons. First views will be a sunset and sunrise at the Grand Canyon while sharing little-known trivia, and then to Antelope Canyon, slot canyon.
Mindful Meditation & Movement: Fridays, Sept. 30 to Nov. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. with Tisha Bremner. This is a new six-week session like the Sept. 16 class. The cost to participate in the full six weeks is $30 or $8 to drop in for a single class.
Gentle Morning Chair Yoga for Seniors: Mondays though Oct. 24 from 9 to 10 a.m. with Tisha Bremner. Bremner will help attendees increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find their inner calm. Classes combine meditation, warm-ups, light stretches and gentle yoga postures. Cost is $40 for eight weeks or $8 per class on a drop-in basis. There will not be class on Sept. 5 or Oct. 10.
Total Strength and Balance Training: Mondays from 11:15 a.m. to noon and Fridays, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with certified trainer Linn Morin. These classes are geared toward anyone, beginner or advanced, who is interested in improving strength, balance and bone density. Cost is $3 for one class per week; $5 for any two classes per week; and $6 for any three classes per week. Registration is required by contacting 207-523-9055.
All classes are free and take place at 8 Falcon Road, unless otherwise noted. The center is fully accessible, and hearing assistive equipment is available.
